These are the words Jesus spoke at 12 years of age when his parents were searching for him after the annual feast of the passover as they made the journey back home. Jesus disappeared on his parents, staying back to listen and speak in the temple, causing them to be greatly concerned. Jesus clearly knew His purpose and not only knew it but embraced it. Jesus couldn't understand why it is that His parents would even look for him; not like he was out making trouble. He was doing the will of the one who sent Him.
I am set on doing the will of the One who created me and gave me life. Now I am not Jesus at all but I am responding to the call to fulfill the great commission. As I examine Jesus' life as relayed to us through the word of God, I realize a number of things happened to Jesus and they will happen to me in some way shape or form.
So we can recall that at 12 years old he was listening and speaking to doctors in the temple. I have long passed this age but not the stage of listening and speaking to persons. Then there was another time when He was older when He was very angry in the temple and had to throw some people out the temple and no doubt there are going to be times when I am just as angry with people violating the principles of God. Now Jesus was still about His Father's business. He had to take Himself away from the crowd and His disciples many times to seek the face and will of God and fasting and praying. Why do I think I will be required to do any less. I need to follow this critical example and remember that Jesus didn't wait until something bad had happened or was going to happen. It was a part of His life and so should be a part of mine.
There are many emotions and experiences that Jesus had to endure. There were times of rejoicing and times of sadness. There was even a time when we thought He might have thrown in the towel but then He was reminded that it wasn't about what He wanted but it was about what God wanted. So I can expect that sort of feeling, but then I need to remember the purpose for which I was created. Jesus was tempted, betrayed and executed. Through all these seemingly negative things, He still trusted in His Heavenly Father to keep Him focused on the mandate - His Father's Business.
